Comeback Daniil Medvedev Secures First Title in 882 Days
19 of the Russian's 21 championships have been earned on hard courts
A revitalized Daniil Medvedev secured his initial title for nearly 30 months with victory over Corentin Moutet in the competition title decider.
The athlete, a former number one, has experienced a torrid period, managing just one win at the Grand Slams and experiencing a meltdown at the New York tournament.
His unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and issues with his service game in particular - resulted in him dropping out of the elite rankings and finally splitting with former coach his previous coach.
Currently training with Johansson and Goetzke, he has steadily improved in the recent weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought three-set triumph over opponent Moutet.
It is Medvedev's initial championship after the Rome competition and initial on a hardcourt since March of that year.
Victory also signifies Medvedev has achieved twenty-one championships at twenty-one distinct tournaments.
"This marks the first occasion I have attended a tournament with my both daughters at once, so to win a title is particularly special," commented world number 14 Medvedev.
"This title is in honour of my second daughter my daughter, because the initial championship I got when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."
The tennis star, the former major winner, had been defeated in his last six title deciders, featuring in the German tournament in the past months.
Medvedev's defensive play style and frequent emotional displays on the tennis court had led observers to doubt if his capacity to perform at the elite level was finished.
But the player has implemented adjustments in the past month, making an effort to approach the net and compete positively, reinforced by an enhanced serving game.
The champion came back from a break down in the first set against the difficult Moutet, securing four of the last five exchanges to gain the advantage.
Both players swapped break points in the following set before the challenger, striving for his initial professional championship, gained dominance to force a final set.
He defended 4 early opportunities in a tight third set before the Russian won the break to that score to close out the victory.
Fittingly, he clinched the win with a rally at the net area, with his opponent incapable to manage a return after a lengthy match.
