British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
